Marita Gootee and Wendy Roussin, art, recently participated in "Fractured Realities," a photographic exhibition at Valdosta State University in Georgia.


Jim Bloodgood, Bert Morrow, Joe Peyrefitte, and Barbara Spencer, management and information systems, presented papers at the Strategic Management Society Conference in Barcelona, Spain, last semester. MSU was the only university to have four papers presented at the premier conference on strategic management.


Sue Minchew

Sue Minchew, curriculum and instruction, won the Mid-South Educational Research Association Herbert Handley Dissertation Award at the recent MSERA Conference in Memphis. Her dissertation is "The Use of Cooperative Editing in Remedial Freshman Composition: An Analysis of its Effectiveness in Improving Students' Written Grammar."


Anita George, The Learning Center, and Kay Krans, curriculum and instruction, were named to the Starkville Education Hall of Fame.


The Department of Art's electronic visualization program was featured in the fall 1997 issue of Artfirst, a publication for Mississippi's professional visual artists and craftspeople.


Terry Sellers Jr., Forest Products Laboratory, Forest and Wildlife Research Center, participated in a television documentary for Kagoshima Broadcasting Corp. of Kyushsu, Japan. The documentary will review the university's cooperative and multidisciplinary research and development with industry for a wide range of products made from the kenaf plant.


Carolyn Bryant, anthropology, sociology and social work, was named Social Work Educator of the Year for Mississippi and Alabama at last fall's Mississippi Social Work Education Conference.


Robert Long and Kristen Woodward, art, were honored recently. Long was awarded first place and $2,000 for his sculptural ceramic piece, "Vase with Split Rim," in the Monarch National Ceramic Competition in Florence, Ala. Woodward received the Second Award in the mixed media category of the 10th National Juried Art Exhibition at the Cobb County Art Alliance in Georgia. She submitted a collage entitled, "Ephraim's Concubine." Woodward also was presented one of six merit awards at Exhibition South '97, a national competitive exhibition sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Art Center in Tuscumbia, Ala.


Linda Seckinger, art, had artworks accepted into several national competitive exhibitions including the National Juried Exhibition of the ARTernatives Gallery in San Luis Obispo, Calif., as well as the National Print Exhibition of the Harris Fine Art Center of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Her print "On a Wing and a Prayer" was accepted into the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery, a part of the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. The same print was acquired for the Chase Special Collections Center of the Collum-Davis Library in Peoria, Ill. She also had a portfolio, "Healing Hands," on exhibition at the Houston (Texas) Art Museum.


The late Lucinda H. Rose, curriculum and instruction, was recognized and honored at the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education 41st Biennial Convocation in November. Her husband Vincent McGrath, curriculum and instruction, current KDP counselor, accepted a plaque in her memory. He was recognized by the KDP Record Review Panel, the Holis Caswell Laureate Scholarship Evaluator Committee and the Constitution and Bylaws Committee for his service to the society.


Jack White, English and University Honors Program, received the Distinguished Service Award for the South and Southeast from the National Association of Academic Affairs Administrators.


Cynthia Webster, marketing, quantitative analysis and business law, will leave in March and spend several months as a Visiting Distinguished Professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth.


Sherry Swain, Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute, and a team of co-researchers recently presented "Researching Professional Development: A Look at Classroom Transformation" at the National Staff Development Council Conference in Nashville. Swain also presented "Further Along the Path of Creation: Music, Art, Poetry, and Movement in English Language Arts" at the National Council of Teachers of English Conference in Detroit. At the National Writing Project Annual Meeting, Swain presented two sessions: "Developing Teacher Leadership" and "An Arts Integration Network for the NWP."


Kim Patterson, Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute, along with teacher consultants Lynette Harris, Linda Buchanan and Tricia Bridges presented a session on their development and research of an integrated assessment model designed in collaboration with PREPS at the National Staff Development Council Conference in December.


J.P. Shim, management and information systems, announced that Mississippi State has signed an agreement with two Korean universities-Kangnam University and Yongin University-to establish a cooperating relationship that will encompass a variety of mutual interest programs.
