Supports projects that broaden and deepen educational experiences for people of all ages, or that reach audiences that have not been reached before. Priority will be given to projects that are of national, regional, or field-wide significance, including unique local projects that are likely to serve as models for a field. Program: Education Development and Demonstration: Humanities Focus Grants
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities
Next Deadline: APR 17, 1998
Enables groups of educators at the same or related institutions to explore humanities topics. These small, "next semester" awards range from $10,000 to $25,000 and support varied types of collegial humanities study, institutional planning, and curricular design. They may also support Teaching with Technology projects. Focus grant applications are due by April 17. All other Development and Demonstration grants are due by Oct 1.

Agency: National Foundation for the Improvement of Education

Leadership Grants underwrite professional development opportunities for teachers, education support personnel, and higher education faculty and staff to prepare them for collegial leadership in teaching and learning. NFIE awards grants of up to $1,000 to individuals to engage in professional development activities that address the needs of students they serve. NFIE will award up to fifty grants per year. Grants will fund activities for twelve months from the date of the award. See http://www.nfie.org.

Supports advocacy, public education, and media strategies that heighten public consciousness around issues affecting women and girls and emphasize women's leadership. Projects may focus on women's economic development, violence against women and girls, and women's reproductive rights. Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000.
Program: Conference Grants on Health Effects of Toxic Substances
Agency: Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
Next Deadline: APR 06, 1998
Program provides partial support for non-federal conferences on disease prevention, health promotion and information/education projects in the following areas: health effects of hazardous substances; disease and exposure registries; hazardous substance removal and remediation; emergency response to toxic disasters; risk communication; disease surveillance; and investigation and research. Target Date: proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports programs of research, teaching, and service to meet the problems of increasing population in the United States and the world. Areas of interest include international family planning; teenage sexuality education and services; freedom of choice; public advocacy; and domestic family planning. The Board of Managers meets twice a year to review applications, usually in the first weeks of April and November. All final requests must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the next scheduled meeting.

Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: APR 01, 1998
Target Date: proposals may be submitted at any time.
Supports efforts to enrich and enhance the teaching experience of teachers of science, math and technology. Funds are provided for such activities as seminars, conferences, and research participation opportunities for teachers who can take a leadership role in peer teaching and for teachers in need of continuing education. New Leadership Institutes will build coalitions of educators and educate a cadre of "master" teachers to educate peers. Required pre-proposals are due April 1; full proposals are due August 25.
Program: Environmental Management Science Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Energy
Next Deadline: MAR 17, 1998
Supports management and disposal of DOE's radioactive, hazardous chemical, and mixed wastes; stabilization of nuclear materials; remediation of contaminated sites; and decontamination and decommissioning of facilities. Basic research should help decrease risk for the public and workers, and address problems that are considered intractable without new knowledge. See http://www.em.doe.gov/science.
