DAAD supports various programs for the improvement of German area studies programs. A summer seminar in German studies is offered (3/1 deadline). A short-term research grant for faculty supports research in contemporary German literature (1/1). Sur Place grants (11/1 and 5/1) support nominated undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students studying contemporary German affairs. Awards are made to improve the financial situation of the nation's cultural institutions and enable them to continue or expand their programs. First time grant recipients must match each federal dollar with 3 non-federal dollars; other recipients must match each award dollar with 4 non-federal dollars. Program: Community Services Food and Nutrition Program
Agency: Administration for Children and Families
Next Deadline: May 1998 (tentative)
Awards grants to state and local organizations, including IHEs, for projects that will help meet the nutrition needs of low-income individuals. Projects must focus on coordination of existing food resources; assisting low-income communities to identify potential sponsors and initiate new programs; and developing innovative service approaches. In FY 97, about $1.6 million was available to award grants of up to $50,000. An announcement is expected at the beginning of March 1998.

Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $10,000 to $100,000
Program: Childhood Agriculture Safety and Health
Research Agency: Centers for Disease Control andPrevention
Next Deadline: Apr 16, 1998
Supports research on risk factors for agricultural injuries associated with child development; social and economic consequences associated with youth workers; and the design and/or evaluation of strategies to prevent childhood agricultural injuries. Program: Academic Research Enhancement Awards
Agency: National Institutes of Health

Competitive three-year renewable awards of up to $75,000 support individual faculty research projects to strengthen the research environment of institutions that provide health-related baccalaureate training for research scientists, but have received less than $2 million in NIH funding for four or more of the last seven years. Program: Research Grants in Advanced Science
Agency: Eppley Foundation
Next Deadline: May 01, 1998
Provides support for research in advanced scientific subjects in the biological and physical sciences. Grants are made to recognized educational and charitable organizations in support of postdoctoral projects. Grants will not support research on cancer, cardiology or AIDS. The Foundation is interested in supporting research for which federal support is not available. Grants of up to $25,000 support one year of research. The Foundation makes about 12 awards each year.

Agency: Horticultural Research Institute
Next Deadline: May 15, 1998
Supports research and dissemination of studies that increase the quality and value of plants, improve the productivity and profitability of the nursey and landscape industry, and protect and enhance the environment. Awards generally range from $5,000 to $10,000. Support is for projects in marketing/consumerism, resource management, pest management, post-production practices, biotechnology, and crop production.
