MacTaggart to perform in March 3 concert

Trombonist Thomas MacTaggart will perform in a Faculty Artist Concert March 3.

MacTaggart, acting assistant director of bands at MSU, will be accompanied by Dr. Joel Harrison of the Music Education Department's piano faculty.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the McComas Hall theater. Admission is $5 for the general public, faculty and staff, and $3 for students.

An alto and tenor trombonist, MacTaggart will play "Sonata per Clarino B-Dur," composed in the 1700s by Carl Heinrich Biber; "Divertimento fur Trompoete, Posaune, und Klavier" by Boris Blacher; and "Trombone Concerto, Op 114" by the contemporary composer Derek Bourgeois.

For the second half of the program, MacTaggart will be joined by Mark Applebaum, piano; Robert Damm, drums; and Tom Daniel, guitar, all of the music education faculty; and Rick Montalto, bass, of the Mississippi University for Women faculty.

The jazz combo will play Jimmy McHugh's "On the Sunny Side of the Street," "Mr. P.C." by John Coltrane and "Ceora" by Lee Morgan.

A candidate for a doctorate at the University of Southern Mississippi, MacTaggart earned his bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and his master's from Florida State University. He has performed commercially with entertainers such as Bernadette Peters, Martha Reeves and The Temptations.
