Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Fellowships for College Teachers and Independent Scholars
Agency: National Endowment for the Humanities
Next Deadline: May 01, 1998
Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for college teachers to pursue six to 12 months of full-time independent study and research that will enhance their capacities as teachers and scholars. Program is designed for both beginning and experienced teachers whose chief responsibilities lie in teaching undergraduate students at institutions that do not have Ph.D. programs in the humanities. Program: Research Awards
Agency: Consortium of Colleges and University Media Centers
Next Deadline: May 01, 1998
Supports the development of new knowledge and practices leading to increased accessibility to and utilization of educational media, equipment, or technology. Preference goes to studies with general application to the field. Studies should focus on the production, selection, development, information retrieval, utilization, distribution, or management of educational technology. Grants of up to $2,000 may go to graduate students and faculty whose institutions are consortium members.

Program: Model Demon. Prog. For Children w/ Disabilities: Early Intervention
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Supports projects that evaluate the effects of changes in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) on young children and their families.

Program: Model Demon. Prog. For Children w/ Disabilities: General
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: Mar 13, 1998
Supports Model demonstration projects that develop, implement, evaluate, and disseminate new or improved approaches for providing education and related services to children with disabilities. Applications are accepted in this broad category as well as in the eight focus areas. See the January 15, 1998 Federal Register.

Program: Model Demon. Prog. For Children w/ Disabilities: Emotional Disturbance
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Supports school and community-based service delivery systems for children with or at risk of emotional disturbance.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Grants Program
Agency: Good Samaritan, Inc. Foundation
Next Deadline: May 15, 1998
Supports research and demonstration projects in the following areas: the study and treatment of dyslexia; higher education; medicine; projects relating to Spain; improvement of the administration of justice; and protection of the environment. Recent grants have ranged in size from $1,000 to $60,000 with a few special grants in excess of $1 million. The Board of Directors meets to consider applications on or about the first Thursday in June and the third Thursday in November. Applicants should submit proposals at least four weeks prior to board meetings.

Program: Grant Program on Problems of the Aging
Agency: Retirement Research Foundation
Next Deadline: May 01, 1998
Program has five major goals: to increase availability and effectiveness of community programs to maintain older persons in independent environments; improve the quality of nursing home care; provide new and expanded opportunities for older persons in employment and volunteer service; support basic, applied and policy research that seeks solutions to problems of the aged; and to educate and train professionals who work with older persons. Innovative projects are encouraged.

Science/Engineering

Program: New Faculty Awards
Agency: Dreyfus (Camille and Henry) Foundation
Next Deadline: May 15, 1998
About ten grants for new faculty members in chemistry are available to U.S. institutions. Funds will be awarded in time for use by the faculty member when he/she formally begins the first year of teaching. Grants are primarily intended as seed money for new ideas and concepts and not as salary support. Funds may also be used for student research stipends, scientific equipment, or other research needs. Faculty must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or related chemical engineering. Grant amount is $25,000.

Program: Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence (KDI) in the Information Age
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: Apr 01, 1998
Foundation-wide, cross-disciplinary effort to catalyze the realization of new resources and institutional transformations connected with recent growth in computer power and connectivity. KDI includes Learning and Intelligent Systems (LIS), which appeared in FY 97; Knowledge Networking (KN); and New Computational Challenges (NCC). KDI will be administered electronically. Submit inquiries via e-mail to kdi@nsf.gov; kn@nsf.gov; lis@nsf.gov; or ncc@nsf.gov. Submit proposals via NSF Fastlane. April deadline is for requested letters of intent.
