"Basic Concepts in Forest Valuation and Investment Analysis," co-authored by College of Forest Resources professor Steven H. Bullard, is a 270-page publication intended to supplement lectures in forestry economics at the undergraduate level. The other co-author is Thomas J. Straka at Clemson University's Department of Forest Resources.

Although only available for a few months, the new publication has already been adopted for use at five institutions with academic programs accredited by the Society of American Foresters. It also has become a valuable resource in workshops for practicing foresters, landowners and others interested in forestry investments, according to Doug Richards, head of the Department of Forestry.

"This manual is a significant contribution to the reference works of practical professional foresters and others, including financial analysts who manage capital assets in the form of forest land and timber," Richards said. "It also is an outstanding analytical guide for students of forestry investment analysis."

Bullard has been a member of the MSU faculty for 15 years. In addition to his duties in the Department of Forestry, he is a forester and scientist with the university's Forest and Wildlife Research Center.
