Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Museum Leadership Initiatives Awards
Agency: Institute of Museum and Library Services
Next Deadline: Jun 19, 1998
Supports the interaction between/among museums & community-based organizations to plan systemic, ongoing relationships. Projects may involve not-for-profit community-based organizations. Proposals should reflect an understanding of the complex issues inherent in establishing & perpetuating mutually beneficial relationships. Projects should be founded on mutually developed goals, & proposals should contain evidence that the project is integral to the missions of all organizations involved. No award will exceed $30,000. Program: Short-Term Travel Grants
Agency: International Research and Exchanges Board
Next Deadline: Jun 01, 1998
Supports brief visits (about two weeks) for humanities & social science scholars engaged in research focused on Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, & (limited opportunities for) Mongolia. Activities funded by these grants include: research visits; presentations at conferences; invited lectures or consultations; collaborative projects & joint publications; & visits of up to two foreign scholars to the U.S. for collaborative research or conference presentations. Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Grants Program
Agency: Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation
Next Deadline: Jun 15, 1998
Supports creative projects & research that promote the pursuit of excellence & adherence to high ethical standards in journalism. Applications should be submitted by June 15 for consideration at the Advisory Committee's mid-summer meeting or by December 15 for consideration at a mid-winter conference.

Program: Youthbuild Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
Next Deadline: Jun 1998 (tentative)
Supports projects that provide economically disadvantaged young adults with opportunities to obtain an education & employment skills necessary to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Project participants receive on-site training experience constructing or rehabilitating housing. See the April 23, 1997 Federal Register for FY 97 details. Call 1-800/998-9999 to order an application. HUD expects to issue a notice in Spring 1998 with a June 1998 deadline.

Health/Mental Health

Program: Research Grant Competition for New Investigators
Agency: American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation
Next Deadline: Jun 19, 1998
Supports new researchers in their studies of speech-language pathology & audiology. Preference is given in the area of treatment research, particularly efficacy & outcome studies. Program: FDA Research Grants
Agency: Food and Drug Administration
Next Deadline: Jun 01, 1998
Funds basic and applied research in the areas of food, drugs, biologics, medical devices, radiological health, & veterinary medicine through both contracts and grants. Applicants are encouraged to talk to FDA staff before sending in a proposal. Dates cited are for unsolicited proposals, which must be submitted to the Center for Scientific Review at NIH, with a courtesy copy to Robins at FDA. See http://www.fda.gov. Science/Engineering

Program: Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR)
Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Next Deadline: May 14, 1998
Invites small business concerns to collaborate with research institutions on space-related R&D leading to commercial technologies advancing U.S. economic competitiveness. Areas of interest include: human operations in space, launch & payload processing systems, structures & materials, turbomachinery, space propulsion, & rocket propulsion testing. A minimum of 40 percent of the work must be performed by the small business & 30 percent performed by the research institution. See http://sbir.gsfc.nasa.gov/.

Program: Research Funding Program
Agency: Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) Foundation
Next Deadline: Jun 30, 1998
Supports research in the following areas related to the paper industry: fibrous raw materials; environmental concerns; pulping; papermaking processes; surface & structure treatments; sensors & process control; && energy & recycling.
