David L. Arnold, geosciences, presented a paper entitled "A Tornado Climatology and Risk Assessment for the Mid-South Region of the United States" at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers.
Scott Betz, Marita Gootee and Amy Oliver, all of art, exhibited 12 works in the 1998 Bi-State Art Competition at the Meridian Museum of Art. Out of approximately 290 submissions, only 57 images were accepted into the competition. Betz was awarded Best of Show and a permanent collection purchase prize from the museum. In addition, he has participated in several national competitive, international and solo exhibitions this year. International and national group exhibitions: "Drawing from Perception II" at Wright State University Art Galleries, Dayton, Ohio; "Confluence 98," Hill Country Arts Foundation's 26th Annual Exhibition at the Duncan-McAshan Visual Arts Center, Ingram, Texas; "Get Real," at Galeria Mesa, Mesa (Ariz.) Arts Center; "International Sapporo Bienniale," Sapporo, Japan; "Bullets in a Brown Paper Bag," Waldron Arts Center, Bloomington, Ind.; "The Irene Rozenweig Biennial Exhibition," Arts and Science Center, Pine Bluff, Ark.; "Cross Currents," Walter Anderson Museum, Ocean Springs; "National Painting Exhibition," Mesa State University, Grand Junction, Colo.; and "Small Works" at 17087 Gallery, Richmond, Va. Solo exhibitions: "Flowers Stolen from Botticelli," Main Street Gallery, Starkville, and Walters State Community College, Morristown, Tenn.; "Paintings and Gadgets," William T. Thompson Gallery, University of Georgia; "New Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture," ID Gallery, Richmond, Va.; "The Arabic/Celtic/Mayan Suite," Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano, Lima, Peru; and Meridian Museum of Art.
Randy Buddington, biological sciences, will speak at the following meetings: IAMS International Nutrition Symposium, San Francisco; Nutritional and Health Benefits of Inulin and Oligofructose, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.; and Satellite Symposium of European Association of Animal Production, Warsaw, Poland.
Jack D. Elliott Jr., state Department of Archives and History/Cobb Institute of Archaeology, won the 1998 Willie D. Halsell Prize for "City and Empire: The Spanish Origins of Natchez," the best article in the Journal of Mississippi History in 1997.
Douglas W. Gamble, geosciences, presented a paper entitled "A Comparison of Seasonal Flood Frequency of Annual-Peak and Partial-Duration Flood Series Across the United States" at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers.
John Marszalek, history, had his latest book, "The Petticoat Affair: Manners, Mutiny and Sex in Andrew Jackson's White House," reviewed in the February issue of American Way magazine, the Feb. 23 issue of The National Review, along with the New York Times and the Washington Post. The book also was a pick of the History Book Club. Marszalek traveled to the University of Mississippi to participate in a panel discussion on "Presidential Scandal, the Press and Print" at The Fifth Oxford Conference for the Book.
MSU-Meridian education professors George Thomas, Linda Walker and Laura Bryan presented "Dealing with Racism and Prejudice" at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development's 53rd Annual Conference and Exhibit Show.
S.F. "Bud" Pasley, International Programs, participated in a conference in Entebbe, Uganda. As program director for the Postharvest Collaborative Agribusiness Support Program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, he assisted the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa in developing a post harvest/value added networking system.
J.P. Shim, management and information systems, is among a group of national business faculty members and executives who will visit India in June. He will present lectures to executives on "Strategic Use of Business Internet and Multimedia."
Jack H. White, English and University Honors Program, was re-elected chairman of the Mississippi Humanities Council.
Karen A. Woodrow-Lafield, sociology, anthropology and social work, presented a paper entitled "Dimensions of Net Unauthorized Migration, 1980-2000" at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers.
