Supports advanced level architectural projects and other arts ventures that directly contribute to architecture. Funding areas include grants to schools for special projects, new curricula, exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, doctoral fellowships, and internships at international schools of architecture and at museums. Grants are usually reserved for the beginning stages of a project and normally do not exceed $10,000. In 1998 the board will give special consideration to projects that consider the reinterpretation, redesign, reuse, and replanning of the built environment on an urban scale. ArtsREACH is a pilot community cultural assessment and planning initiative that supports partnerships between arts organizations, business, libraries, IHEs and others, for the purpose of encouraging the development, availability and preservation of artistic and cultural resources. Only partnerships in the following states are eligible: AL, AR, DE, ID, IN, IA, KS, MS, MT, NE, NV, ND, OK, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, WV, and WY. Program: Literacy Leader Fellowships

Fellowships are awarded directly to outstanding individuals who are pursuing careers in adult education or literacy in the areas of instruction, management, research, or innovation and adult new learners. The fellow's project or research interest is typically expected to match the priority areas of NIL. Awards are for up to one year; approximately three awards will be made in FY 98. Program: NIJ Investigator-Initiated Research

Program: Education Programs in Occupational Safety and Health
Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Supports Educational Resource Center (ERC) training grants for occupational physicians and health nurses, industrial hygienists, and occupational safety personnel. In FY 98, CDC awarded six competing continuation or new ERC grants. An additional $1.1 million was available to support educational programs to manage hazardous materials. Program: NIOSH Special Emphasis Research Career Awards (SERCA) (K01)

Encourage highly qualified individuals in the earlier stages of postgraduate careers to develop research interests in occupational safety and health. Priority areas include: irritant dermatitis; asthma; reproductive abnormalities; hearing loss; infectious diseases; low back disorders; work environment; and traumatic injuries. Program: Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences

Supports unusual departmental or institutional efforts in education in the chemical sciences. Support is available for, but not limited to: curriculum development; enhancement of institutional research capabilities (including equipment); special programs for students or teachers; and outreach efforts to increase career interest in the chemical sciences. Program: Living Stock Collections

Supports the operation of living organism and seed collections and stock centers important for the preservation of essential scientific resources at the national or international level. Allowable costs include technical assistants, storage and growth equipment, expendable equipment and supplies, publication of stock lists, minor renovation, and use of advisory committees. Development of electronic databases is supported, and is required for collections supported over the long term. Proposal deadline is the first Tuesday in July.
