Program: U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program

Provides funds for up to five artists to complete residency in Japan during a six-month period. Artists may live anywhere in Japan to pursue topics of greatest relevance to their creative process. Eligible artists include: choreographers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, solo theater artists, visual artists, multidisciplinary artists, and artistic directors of theater or dance companies. Program: Drug-Free Communities Support Program

Supports community coalitions to increase citizen participation and strengthen community anti-drug coalition efforts for reducing substance abuse among youth (and eventually adults) in the U.S. IHEs are eligible to partner with other community organizations. DOJ will make between 100 and 200 grants of up to $100,000 in FY 98. Eligible community coalitions must have worked together on substance abuse activities for at least six months. Program: Preparation of Personnel (IDEA): Projects of National Significance

Supports projects of national significance relating to training of personnel who educate and provide early intervention services to children with disabilities. ED expects to announce the FY 98 competition by May 1998 with a deadline in June.

Program: Special Grant Program in the Chemical Sciences

Supports unusual departmental or institutional efforts in education in the chemical sciences. Support is available for, but not limited to: curriculum development; enhancement of institutional research capabilities (including equipment); special programs for students or teachers; and outreach efforts to increase career interest in the chemical sciences. Program: Climate and Global Change Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Commerce
Next Deadline: May 1998 (tentative)
Supports research to improve prediction of and response to changes in the global environment. FY 97 priorities included: Atlantic climate change/world ocean circulation; atmospheric chemistry; data and detection; climate observations; economics and human dimensions of climate fluctuations; education; and GEWEX Continental-Scale International Project. A tentative deadline for required letters of intent is May 22, 1998. A tentative deadline for full proposals is August 4, 1998. NOAA hopes to announce this program with new priorities in late April.
