Supports 700 grants annually for research and lecturing in about 135 countries. Opportunities range from two months to one year; many assignments are flexible to needs of grantee. Virtually all disciplines and subfields participate. Language skills are needed for some countries, but most lecturing assignments are in English. Grants are made to individuals, or to institutions in support of an individual, for research to promote understanding of human social problems related to dominance, aggression, and violence. Grants are usually made for one or two years, and the typical grant ranges in size from $15,000 to $30,000. Awards are made to non-profit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth, as related to science education, environmental education and job training. Emphasis is on broad, innovative and forward-thinking projects with national scope that are dedicated to improving the human condition. Grants during the past year ranged from $20,000 to $50,000.

Supports basic and applied research relating to the production of dairy products for human consumption and the nutrition of dairy products for humans. The four categories of research are cheese and whey, fluid milk, milkfat, and consumers' perceptions of dairy products. Many IHEs belong to one of 6 regional DMI research centers in the U.S. An institution should contact the center to which it belongs for more information and to find out the deadline for that center. Focus areas include measures of racism and the study of its consequences on the health of mothers and children; the roles of fathers in their children's development; and the impact of health care reform and managed care services. Program: NHGRI: NRSA Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships

Provides opportunities for research training to characterize the human genome and the genomes of selected model organisms. Individual and Senior Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to molecular biologists, physical, chemical, mathematical and computer scientists, engineers, and humanists for training in genomic research or the ethical and social implications of such research. Supports the purchase of special-purpose equipment for research in computer science and computer engineering. Equipment must be needed for more than one project and must be the kind of equipment that would be difficult to justify for one project alone. Funds for first year maintenance may also be requested. The total cost must be at least $30,000, and one-quarter or more cost-sharing is required. The program does not support development of general computer capacity. Improves capability of U.S. universities to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense by supporting the purchase of larger items of research equipment. DOD will consider proposals in any areas of interest to DOD, including material sciences; chemistry; mathematics; electronics; aerospace; computer science; engineering; and ocean and atmospheric sciences.
