Arts/Humanities/International

Program: Research Grants
Agency: Guggenheim (Harry Frank) Foundation
Next Deadline: Aug 01, 1998
Grants are made to individuals, or to institutions in support of an individual, for research to promote understanding of human social problems related to dominance, aggression, and violence. Grants are usually made for one or two years, and the typical grant ranges in size from $15,000 to $30,000. Awards may be used for salaries, employee benefits, research assistantships, computer time, supplies and equipment, field work, and secretarial and technical help. See http://www.hfg.org/.

Program: Grants and Fellowships
Agency: Kennedy (John F.) Library Foundation
Next Deadline: Aug 15, 1998
Supports postdoctoral and dissertation research for studies that would benefit from use of the Kennedy Library. Areas of interest include foreign intelligence and the presidency; Latin American or Western Hemisphere history or policy studies from the Roosevelt through the Kennedy administrations; immigration, naturalization, or refugee policy; domestic policy; political journalism; polling; or press relations. Education/Human and Community Development

Program: COPS Universal Hiring Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: Jul 10, 1998
Supports hiring and/or rehiring of additional sworn law enforcement officers to engage in community policing. State, local and Indian law enforcement agencies and agencies serving special jurisdictions, such as colleges, are eligible to apply. Grants cover up to 75 percent of total entry-level salary and benefits for each officer over three years, for up to $75,000 per officer. See www.usdoj.gov/cops or 800/421-6770. FY 98 competition deadlines are January 30, March 20, May 22, and July 10.

Program: BJA Open Solicitation Announcement
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice
Next Deadline: Jul 02, 1998
Supports innovative programs that strengthen the nation's criminal justice system. Grants are awarded to state, local, or tribal government agencies, but IHEs may collaborate with these units. FY 98 priority areas include: community justice, hate crimes, senior citizens, alcohol and crime, indigent defense, public health, rural communities, and local priorities. Health/Mental Health

Program: National Research Service Awards - Senior Postdoctoral Fellowships (F33)
Agency: National Institutes of Health
Next Deadline: Aug 05, 1998
Awards are for up to two years to individuals with at least seven years of relevant postdoctoral professional or research experience to make major changes in the direction of their research careers or to broaden their scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. Proposed study must be full-time and include the conduct of research with supervision. Program: NHGRI: NRSA Individual Postdoctoral Fellowships
Agency: National Institutes of Health

Provides opportunities for research training to characterize the human genome and the genomes of selected model organisms. Individual and Senior Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to molecular biologists, physical, chemical, mathematical and computer scientists, engineers, and humanists for training in genomic research or the ethical and social implications of such research. Science/Engineering

Program: Instrumentation Grants for Research in Computer and Info. Science and Engr.
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: Aug 05, 1998
Supports the purchase of special-purpose equipment for research in computer science and computer engineering. Equipment must be needed for more than one project and must be the kind of equipment that would be difficult to justify for one project alone. Funds for first year maintenance may also be requested. The total cost must be at least $30,000, and one-quarter or more cost sharing is required. The program does not support development of general computer capacity. Program: Science and Technology Studies Program
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: Aug 01, 1998
Supports research on the nature and processes of development in science and technology; interaction between science and technology and their impact on society; interactions of social and intellectual forces that promote or retard the advance of science; and differences in the nature of theory and evidence in different scientific fields. The history of medicine is not supported. Program supports research, postdoctoral fellowships, dissertation research, training grants, and conferences and workshops.
