Dr. S.W. "Skip" Jack recently was named to the American Veterinary Medicine Association's Aquaculture and Seafood Advisory Committee.
Jack, a nine-year veteran of the College of Veterinary Medicine, is an associate professor and head of the aquatic medicine section.
The committee reviews health and safety issues, making recommendations to AVMA concerning governmental policies and regulations that affect both food producers and consumers. Issues range from import and export regulations to processing plant inspections to approval and development of antibiotics to prevent diseases in food fish.
Because catfish is the No. 1 farm-raised food fish in the United States-with Mississippi raising the bulk-the work of the committee is of special importance to the state.
"I am excited about serving on this committee and representing MSU and the catfish industry," Jack said. "I feel that through my participation on the committee, we can impact the future development and expansion of aquaculture, not only in Mississippi, but in the United States and globally."
