Ainsworth to direct veterinary research

Dr. Jerald Ainsworth is the new director of veterinary medical research for the College of Veterinary Medicine.

"Dr. Ainsworth's experience in serving on proposal review panels and journal editorial boards, in training graduate students and his vast knowledge of the veterinary and agricultural research systems easily made him the first choice for this position," said Dean Dwight Mercer.

An 18-year veteran of CVM, Ainsworth's research focuses on the characterization of the immune system in channel catfish. He has authored more than 50 scholarly articles and received more than $1 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health.

Ainsworth received his bachelor's degree from Delta State University and his master's and doctorate from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
