Program: Census Bureau Research Fellow Program
Agency: American Statistical Association
Next Deadline: Dec 10, 1998
Brings senior statisticians & social scientists to the Census Bureau for six months to a year to participate in the production of the data for their respective fields. Areas of interest include social & demographic studies, economic measurement & analysis, & statistical methodology & computing. Stipends are commensurate with qualifications & experience. Program: Computer Systems, Architecture and Software Program
Agency: National Science Foundation
Next Deadline: Oct 13, 1998
Supports research in new concepts for the architecture of computer sytems & the software that runs them, including research in processor, memory system & I/O architecture, multiprocessor architectures, operating systems, distributed computing systems, techniques for design & optimization of compilers & parallel computing systems, & algorithms. The October 13 deadline is for Computer Systems Architecture; Operating Systems (November 10, 1998, deadline); Compilers (January 12, 1999) & Software Engineering & languages (October 20, 1998). Program: Small Research Grants
Agency: American Astronomical Society
Next Deadline: Dec 01, 1998
Supports the costs associated with any type of astronomical research. Astronomers from smaller, less endowed institutions will be given priority. Awards range in size from $300 to $5,000. Page charges, computing costs, equipment, shipping of equipment, & travel to observatories are all acceptable costs. Program: Centennial Research Fellowships
Agency: American Mathematical Society

Awards postdoctoral fellowships to individuals who have held their Ph.D.s for at least two years at the time of the award & who do not hold permanent tenure. Provides $36,000 for one-year Research Fellowships. North American citizenship or permanent residency is required. Agency: Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation

Supports creative projects & research that promote the pursuit of excellence & adherence to high ethical standards in journalism. Applications should be submitted by June 15 for consideration at the Advisory Committee's mid-summer meeting or by December 15 for consideration at a mid-winter conference.

Education/Human and Community Development

Program: Managing Information with Rural America (MIRA)
Agency: Kellogg (W.K.) Foundation

MIRA is a major four-year initiative (started in 1997) of Kellogg's Food Systems & Rural Development Program area designed to assist rural communities in using information systems & technologies to enhance community development. Five community clusters comprised of six to ten teams per cluster will be selected (deadline 12/31/98). There will be ten to fifteen community support organizations per cluster (deadline 4/15/99) & at least one policy support organization chosen to work with each cluster (deadline 11/30/98).
