Program: Grants for German Studies Programs
Agency: DAAD: German Academic Exchange Service
Next Deadline: Apr 15, 1999
DAAD supports various programs for the improvement of German area studies programs, Fellowships for Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D.'s and junior faculty to study post-war Germany (4/15/99). A short-term research grant for faculty supports research in contemporary German literature (1/1). Sur Place grants (11/1 and 5/1) support nominated undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students studying contemporary German affairs. Program: Teacher Quality Enhancement: Recruitment Grants Program
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Supports activities to reduce shortages of highly qualified teachers in high-need school districts. Eligible applicants are states, or partnerships consisting of high need local educational agencies, teacher preparation institutes, or schools of arts and sciences. Competitive three-year renewable awards of up to $75,000 support individual faculty research projects to strengthen the research environment of institutions that provide health-related baccalaureate training for research scientists, but have received less than $2 million in NIH funding for four or more of the last seven years. Program: New Faculty Awards
Agency: Dreyfus (Camille and Henry) Foundation

About ten grants for new faculty members in chemistry are available to U.S. institutions. Funds will be awarded in time for use by the faculty member when he/she formally begins the first year of teaching. Grants are primarily intended as seed money for new ideas and concepts and not as salary support. Faculty must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or related chemical engineering. Program: Grants Program
Agency: Horticultural Research Institute
Next Deadline: May 01, 1999
Supports research and dissemination of studies that increase the quality and value of plants, improve the productivity and profitability of the nursey and landscape industry, and protect and enhance the environment. Awards generally range from $5,000 to $10,000. Support is for projects in marketing/consumerism, resource management, pest management, post-production practices, biotechnology, and crop production.
