Paul Allen, accounting, MSU-Meridian, presented two papers at the Midsouth Association of Accounting and Finance. They were entitled "Why Reversing Entries should be Eliminated from the Introductory Accounting Course," and "The Relation between Audit Responsibility and Esteem for Ethical Standards of Objectivity." Both papers will be published in the proceedings book for the conference and considered for inclusion in the Journal of Accounting and Finance Theory.


David C. Banks, computer science, and John T. Foley, physics and astronomy, had an article, "The Optics Project," published in the November 1998 issue of Optics & Photonics News.


Linda Cornelious, technology and education, is serving a two-year term on the board of directors for the Mid-South Educational Research Association.


Don Dearholt, computer science, was elevated to the grade of Senior Member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.


Don Downer, biological sciences, was named to the Starkville Area Education Hall of Fame in 1998. The award is given each year to local residents who have achieved state, regional and national recognitional in the field of education.


Duane A. Gill, sociology, anthropology and social work, was named a Fulbright Scholar for 1998-99. He will be lecturing and doing research on environmental social science at the University of Bahrain, Manama, Bahrain, through June.


David Huddleston, civil engineering, presented a paper at the Third International Conference on Hydroscience and Engineering in Cottbus, Germany.


Tom Lindsay, Telecommunications director, was elected to his second term as president of the Mississippi Telecommunications Management Association for 1999. MTMA members represent more than 70 Mississippi companies in a variety of industries including education, government, banking and financial services, insurance, transportation, and health care.


"The Petticoat Affair: Manners, Mutiny and Sex in Andrew Jackson's White House," by John Marszalek, history, will be published in large-print editions by Thorndike Press. Marszalek also participated in "The 7th Annual Sarasota Civil War Symposium" where he was in a panel discussion on "Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis and Fort Sumter: Who Started the War?" He also gave a talk on "'Old Brains Halleck': Just Who Was This Man?"


David T. Morse, educational psychology, won the Harry L. Bowman Service Award from the Mid-South Educational Research Association for his service to the organization and the profession. A past president, he is the current chair of the Archives Committee. He designed and implemented a computer-based system for retrieving the organization's archives and past papers housed at Mitchell Memorial Library. He also serves as the organization's webmaster.


Vice President for Business Affairs Leah Norman was appointed chair of the Research and Doctoral Committee of the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers. She also is a member of the SACUBO's Professional Development Committee.


An article on "Effects of Specially Varying Ground Motions on Short Bridges" by Tom Price, civil engineering, was published in the August 1998 American Society of Civil Engineers' Journal of Structural Engineering.


Kirk Rosenhan, aerospace engineering, is registered as a charter engineer with the United Kingdom's Engineering Council Division. To earn the designation, engineers must meet requirements including education, experience and an oral examination. A member of England's Institute of Fire Safety, Rosenhan also is a founding member of the U.S.-U.K. Fire Symposium.


Darrel Schmitz, geosciences, was appointed a member of the National Association of State Boards of Geology Council of Examiners. The two-year appointment will allow Schmitz to work with the written ASBOG registration examinations.


Linda K. Seckinger, art, represented Mississippi in "Colorprint USA-1998," a national exhibition of original prints by 53 artists. The juried show opened nationwide in 50 museums and galleries and included prints from at least one artist from every state.


Carol Short, continuing education, had an article on "Services for the adult distance learner: one-stop shopping," published in the November issue of Marketing Credit and Degree Programs.


Christopher Skinner, educational psychology, and graduate students Katrina Rhymer, Karen Dittmer and Bertha Jackson won the Outstanding Research Award in paper competition at the annual meeting of the Mid-South Educational Research Association for "The Effects of an Academic Game on Multiplication Facts."


A team of MSU educators was among presenters at a meeting of the National Writing Project in Nashville, held in conjunction with a meeting of the National Council of Teachers of English. Sherry Swain, Writing/Thinking Institute director, presented two sessions related to the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration. Other participants included Reuben Dilworth, director of the Center for Educational Partnerships, Kim Patterson, Writing/Thinking Institute, and Tricia Bridges, visiting assessment coordinator. Swain also was a presenter at a 1998 international conference that brought together participants in the National Writing Project, "Global Conversations on Language and Literacy." Swain's presentation was "Paths to the Place of Creation."



George Thomas, education, MSU-Meridian, was the keynote speaker for the Foundation Luncheon at the Phi Delta Kappa District 5 Conference in Grand Rapids, Mich.
