Michael Ballard, Mitchell Memorial Library, wrote a chapter, "Misused Merit: The Tragedy of John C. Pemberton," for a book of essays, "Civil War Generals in Defeat," published by the University Press of Kansas and a History Book Club selection.
Ida B. Dixon, Center for Safety and Health, was awarded a certificate of appreciation by the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Atlanta for 10 years of service and contributions to the Mississippi OSHA Consultation Program that is managed by the center.
Danny Gardner, Agricultural Communications, won the Gold Award in Class 3, Writing, for his work on the Mississippi State Extension Service annual report, "Extension Values: Partnerships, Distance Education, Economic Security, Economic Prosperity." The Agricultural Communicators in Education presented the award.
An interview about "The Petticoat Affair" with author John Marszalek, History, on the Book Notes television program is included in a new book, "Book Notes Life Stories: Notable Biographers on the People Who Shaped America." His book, "The Petticoat Affair: Manners, Mutiny and Sex in Andrew Jackson's White House," is still featured in the "History Book Club Review." Marszalek also presented the following lectures: Civil War Round Table of New York City, Bentonville (N.C.) Battle Field Symposium, East Carolina University, Seventh Annual Kankakee Valley Civil War Symposium (Chicago area), and the Jackson Rotary Club.
Pete Melby, Landscape Architecture, spoke at the National Wildlife Federation Sustainable Campus Design Clinic recently. Also attending the clinic were Robert Johnston, Physical Plant, and Doug Alexander, Support Services.
Members of the Department of Physics and Astronomy recently led a team of international collaborators in an experiment conducted at the Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. The experiment conducted by Peter Varmette, Rodney B. Piercey, Wenchao Ma, and Jeff Winger.
Dorothy Tate, Telecommunications, was named the Most Outstanding African-American Woman in the Workplace for 1998-1999 by the Nu Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Joe Thompson, Aerospace Engineering, is one of 26 members of President Clinton's Information Technology Advisory Committee, which is recommending a federal investment of more than $1.3 billion in information technology over the next five years.
W. William Wilson, Chemistry, was appointed to a three-year term on the Microgravity Science and Applications Science Council of the Universities Space Research Association of Columbia, Md.
