Library back in research ranks

Mitchell Memorial Library once again is joining the ranks of the largest academic research libraries in the Southeast.

The university has been notified that it is being readmitted to the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, a group of 31 libraries in a 12-state region.

Dean of Libraries Frances Coleman said readmission is a step toward achieving membership in the Association of Research Libraries, one of the university's adopted priorities.

"Mississippi State had been active in ASERL until 1992, when we failed to qualify," she said. "We look forward to again being an active member of this association and of working with other members in projects involving resource sharing, networking and cost-effective measures. Our membership also will ensure additional research resources for our faculty members."

To be eligible, libraries must meet criteria that include benchmark expenditures for library operations, as well as expenditures for books, periodicals and bindings. Continued membership depends on maintaining the criteria.

Coleman said budgetary enhancements for the library by the university administration assure continued membership in the association.

"Through his support for the library, Dr. Portera has demonstrated that he recognizes the significant role of the library as it relates to the teaching, learning and research components of the university."
