Hargrove is outstanding humanist


MSU's Outstanding Humanist for 1999 will discuss influences on the work of poet T.S. Eliot during a multimedia presentation Oct. 27.

Dr. Nancy D. Hargrove of English, a Giles Distinguished Professor and John Grisham Master Teacher, will present "The Great Parade: Interdisciplinary Influences from Paris and London in the Work of T.S. Eliot" at 3 p.m. in the Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library. Hargrove's topic will draw from her recent research in London and Paris.

The Outstanding Humanist Award program is co-sponsored by the Institute for the Humanities, Mississippi Humanities Council and MSU College of Arts and Sciences. Members of the selection committee include Drs. Michael Clifford, Lorenzo Crowell, Don Mabry, Susan Snell, and Ann Wiltrout.

Hargrove joined the English department in 1970 where she specializes in the works of T.S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath and in 20th century U.S. poetry and drama. Among her honors are four Fulbright Awards, an MSU alumni teaching award, an honors program teaching award, and teaching awards from the South Atlantic Association of Departments of English. In addition, she was honored by her alma mater, Agnes Scott College, as an outstanding alumna.

She is the author of two books, "Landscape as Symbol in the Poetry of T.S. Eliot," and "The Journey Towards Ariel: Sylvia Plath's Poems of 1956-59." She also has published more than 30 essays in journals and books and co-authored a CD-ROM on Eliot.

Hargrove is active as a guest lecturer.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Agnes Scott in Decatur, Ga., a master's from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina.
