TITLE: Higher-Order Cognitive Functioning and Aging

ITEM: Notice requesting applications from qualified researchers for projects that focus on adulthood and aging-related changes in the higher-order processes and strategies required for judgment, decision-making, reasoning, problem-solving, and processing of complex information.

ITEM: Notice requesting new applications for FY 2000 under the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program, which provides grants to help build a nation-wide capability in elementary and secondary schools to identify and meet the special educational needs of gifted and talented students, to encourage the development of rich and changing curricula for all students, and to supplement and make more effective the expenditures of state and local funds for the education of gifted and talented students.

Awards are made to nonprofit organizations, including colleges and universities, for projects that meet the most pressing needs of youth (especially minority students). Most funded projects have included job training or math, science, and environmental education improvement. Emphasis is on broad, innovative, and forward-thinking projects with national scope. Grants during the past few years have ranged from $20,000 to $50,000. Feedback will be given if the proposal is received one month before deadline. Program: Telecommunications Demonstration Project for Mathematics
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: Mar 10, 2000
Provides support to a nonprofit telecommunications entity or partnership to carry out a national telecommunications-based demonstration project that will improve the teaching of mathematics. The project must use the existing telecommunication infrastructure to train teachers in the use of new standards-based curricula and learning technologies. Program: Preparation of Personnel (IDEA): Projects of National Significance
Agency: U.S. Department of Education

Supports projects that develop, implement and evaluate models that will improve the recruitment, preparation, retention and development of early intervention personnel, general and special education teachers, administrators and related service professionals. Program: Research and Innovation: Directed Research Projects
Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Next Deadline: Mar 20, 2000
Supports research on the educational and early intervention needs of children with disabilities. In FY 00 research projects have to address one of four areas: inclusion of disabled students in large-scale assessment programs; instructional interventions and results for children with disabilities; early and prescriptive assessment; gender and special education; research to improve literary results for children; and research to improve reading comprehension.
