In recent Veterans Day ceremonies, retired Navy Capt. Thomas J. Hudner Jr. presented the Korean War Service Medal to Daisy Brown Thorne of Hattiesburg in memory of her husband Ensign Jesse L. Brown. The first African-American naval aviator, Brown died in 1950 during fighting in what is now North Korea; Hudner, of Concord, Mass., earned the Medal of Honor for his attempt to rescue Brown.
