Oakley to lead national group

Charlotte B. Oakley

Charlotte Oakley

Human sciences associate professor Charlotte B. Oakley will assume leadership of a national accrediting body when she becomes its chair in June.

Oakley currently is chair-elect of the 12-member Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education, the body responsible for enforcing standards for all dietetic and nutrition programs. She is in the middle of a three-year term with the commission, which is affiliated with the 70,000-member American Dietetic Association.

"There are approximately 600 programs accredited in the U.S. by CADE," Oakley said. "Graduating from an accredited program is the only way to become a registered dietician in this country."

She added that CADE also offers international accreditation.

Because of her role with CADE, Oakley also will serve a term on the Council of Higher Education Accreditation, a national nonprofit organization that coordinates accreditation activity. She is one of two Mississippians who are CHEA members.

The Bruce resident holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Mississippi and a doctorate in nutrition from Mississippi State. She joined the School of Human Sciences faculty in 1999.
