The entire university community is invited to participate in a series of six "town hall meetings" starting this week to provide feedback to committees working to complete the self-study.
Mississippi State's self-study report is scheduled for completion this fall in advance of a spring 2003 review team visit as part of the process leading to reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Institutional mission and measures of institutional effectiveness are the topics of the first meeting, set for Thursday, Feb. 14, at 3:45 p.m. in the Mitchell Memorial Library auditorium.
During the first meeting, the self-study Committee on Institutional Purpose, chaired by Dr. Phillip Oldham, will seek comment on a proposed mission statement drafted as a planned replacement for the currently used Statement of Purpose adopted in 1993.
Also at the Feb. 14 meeting, a discussion of issues related to measuring and documenting institutional effectiveness will be led by Committee on Institutional Effectiveness chair Bob Altenkirch and co-chair Nancy Reichert. Interim President Charles Lee will convene the session.
Other meetings, each focusing on a different subject or related group of subjects to be dealt with in the self-study, are planned for Feb. 14 and 26, March 6 and 28, and April 11 and 24. All meetings will begin at 3:45 p.m. and will be held in the library auditorium.
Future discussion topics are graduate education, on Feb. 26; the research program, on March 6; undergraduate education and student life, on March 28; distance education, outreach, and service, on April 11; and financial and physical resources, on April 24.
All students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend the open meetings and take part in the discussion, said self-study director Leslie Bauman.
"Active participation will provide valuable input to the self-study committees regarding institutional enhancement, as well as compliance with accreditation criteria," Bauman said.
