Dr. Darrel W. Schmitz
A Mississippi State geologist has assumed leadership of the national organization overseeing state geologic registration licensing boards.
In January, Dr. Darrel W. Schmitz, a professor in the Department of Geosciences, was named president of the national Association of State Boards of Geology. ASBOG serves as the link between individual state boards and the general public.
Schmitz will serve one term as president and then remain on the Executive Committee the following year as past president.
In addition to his work with ASBOG, Schmitz is active in state, regional and national geological organizations. In the late 1990s, he was appointed to the first Mississippi Board of Registered Geologists and later served as its president. He also is a member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists where he has held several Mississippi section positions, including president. He is a member of the Association of Engineering Geologists, where he has received two Presidential Awards, the Geological Society of America and the National Ground Water Association's Association of Groundwater Scientists and Engineers.
Schmitz earned an undergraduate degree in geology from Mississippi State in 1980, a master's in engineering science-geology from the University of Mississippi in 1985 and a doctorate in geology from Texas A&M University in 1991.
He joined the MSU faculty in 1990.
