Classical guitarist to perform March 19

A classical guitarist who is a University of Southern Mississippi faculty member will perform March 19 as part of MSU's Lyceum Series.

Giovanni DeChiaro will appear in the Colvard Union ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and are priced $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens (by request) and $2 for children 3-12. MSU students are admitted free with student identification.

Before he joined the Hattiesburg faculty, DeChiaro taught at the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, N.J., while pursuing graduate studies at New York University.

He made his New York debut in 1976 in a Carnegie Hall performance and has performed in concerts throughout the United States, Mexico and Europe, as well as for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in Rome. In addition, he was invited to perform for then-President Bill Clinton at a special Christmas function at the White House.

Among his honors, in 1989, DeChiaro was commissioned by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to compose an original classical guitar composition for the space shuttle program. And, the editors of the national journal Musical America named him one of the magazine's Young Artists of the Year in 1982.
