Cobb to name library after former head

Vardaman

Vardaman

The Cobb Institute of Archaeology will name its library after the facility's first director during an April 12 special ceremony.

The library will be named the E.J. Vardaman Reading Room to honor the late E. Jerry Vardaman, who served as the institute's director for nine years.

Recruited to MSU by institute founders Lois Dowdle and Cully A. Cobb in 1972, Vardaman oversaw planning and construction of the building and facilities that were dedicated in 1975. He stepped down as director in 1981, but continued as Middle Eastern archaeologist and professor of religion in the Department of Philosophy and Religion until his retirement in 1993. Vardaman died in 2000.

The naming ceremony begins at 4 p.m. in the Cobb Institute, followed by a reception in the institute's foyer and Founder's Room. In addition, the library and museum will be open to the public.
