Since none had an opponent, selection of the top three leaders for the 2002-03 school year required only a few minutes at the Robert Holland Faculty Senate's April 12 meeting.
Dr. Walter Diehl is the new senate chair, while Dr. Linda Pote is the new vice chair. LeDonne Delgado continues as secretary. Diehl is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences; Pote, a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine; Delgado, an associate professor at Mitchell Memorial Library.
All have leadership experience on the 50-member representative body. Delgado is senior among the trio in service, having been the official keeper of senate minutes and records for the past three years. Diehl was this year's vice chair and Pote chaired the Charter and Bylaws Committee.
After choosing officers, the senate moved on to consideration of committee reports.
With little discussion and widespread agreement, members accepted six recommendations by the Ancillary Affairs Committee of possible ways to help deal with MSU's central campus parking problems. The committee was responding to a Feb. 1 letter from Dr. Andy Gillentine, chair of the University Parking Committee, seeking senate support for suggestions members of his group had discussed without taking action.
Mirroring, in large part, options outlined by the campus-wide parking committee, the Ancillary Affairs recommendations include:
--Increasing the numbers of ticket writers;
--Installing gates on faculty and staff lots;
--Designating more lots as wheel-lock zones;
--Increasing parking fines;
--Developing a policy for revoking the parking privileges of repeat offenders; and
--Evaluating the locations and numbers of handicapped parking spaces.
The Ancillary Affairs report was accepted 33-1.
A complete summary of these and other matters at the April meeting is available on the Internet at the senate home page, which is reached via http://www.msstate.edu, then by clicking the "Academic Programs" icon and scrolling to "Organizations." Also, in time, a University Television Center-developed video replay of the entire meeting will be available for viewing at this site.
