Wireless data network soon to be completed

A new wireless computer network, under deployment since fall 2001, will be available for faculty, staff and student users some time this summer.

Initially, the network will allow access from public areas, such as Perry Cafeteria, Colvard Union, the Drill Field, and Mitchell Memorial Library. While the underlying infrastructure for the new network has been under development, properly equipped laptop and handheld computers have been able to gain access in these locations without being required to log in.

Soon, campus users will be required to log in before gaining access to the network via the highly secure Virtual Private Network within the wireless realm. They may use their NetID and password, which is the same as the PIN used to log in to the University Information System.

Ultimately, the wireless network will overlay and supplement all of the extensive wired network already in place on campus, allowing users to log in and securely access the network using their laptops and handhelds from a growing number of convenient locations.
