MSU to host winter scholar symposium

Mississippi State is hosting the Alliance for Graduate Education in Mississippi's third annual Winter Scholar Symposium Jan. 23-25.

AGEM is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation Minority Graduate Education Program, in conjunction with Mississippi State, Jackson State University, and the universities of Mississippi and Southern Mississippi. The program urges underrepresented students to complete doctoral degrees in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), seeks to increase the number of those students who pursue academic careers, and encourages changes in attitudes and practices of faculty, administrators and students regarding minority issues.

The symposium allows underrepresented students at the graduate and undergraduate level, as well as faculty and administrators, to receive information on networking, retention, mentoring, GRE preparation, and dissertation/thesis writing, among other topics. In addition, recruiters from universities throughout the Southeast are on hand to offer students information about the AGEM program.

Symposium activities include scientific oral presentations, a recruitment fair, plenary sessions featuring members of the U.S. Congress, college and university faculty and administrators from across the nation, panel discussions, a reception, and a banquet. Student scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

The theme of this year's symposium is "Embracing Diversity, Enhancing Outreach: Striving for Excellence in STEM."
