The College of Forest Resources and Information Technology Services have joined in an effort to expand the use of Web-based technologies by faculty members.
The partnership allows ITS to deliver specialized training sessions on WebCT for CFR instructional staff. WebCT is a course management system designed to aid in managing courses and in the delivery and facilitation of online instruction and learning. WebCT was adopted as the "primary" course management system for MSU following recommendations of a 2001 faculty committee. Its uses range from simple grade management all the way to offering a class totally online.
Dr. Bob Karr, CFR associate dean, said he believes faculty participating in the training are "seeing a need to go through and re-evaluate their courses,as well as see how they manage and organize." He added that faculty members are excited about the additional element of Web instruction and the benefits they can bring to students by using WebCT.
In the past year, ITS has expanded its direct support for faculty using WebCT. ITS now offers seven different WebCT workshops and has individual instructional technology support available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Open lab times with direct access to ITS computing consultants are held at the beginning and end of each semester for faculty to work on WebCT courses.
The workshops, open labs and individual assistance provided to CFR are available to any college, school or department at Mississippi State.
