President Lee, Dr. Will Carpenter and E. Allen Maxwell

Dr. Will D. Carpenter (c) is presented a plaque from President J. Charles Lee (l) and E. Allen Maxwell of New Albany, national president of the alumni association.

Dr. Will D. Carpenter of Chesterfield, Mo., a 1952 Mississippi State graduate, is the 2003 National Alumnus of the Year.

His selection was announced Jan. 24 at the MSU Alumni Association's annual leadership banquet.

Carpenter earned a bachelor's degree from MSU in agronomy before enrolling in Purdue University, where he received master's and doctoral degrees in plant physiology in 1956 and '58, respectively.

After a 34-year career with Monsanto Co., he retired as vice president and general manager of the new products division for the agricultural group in 1992.

Currently, Carpenter serves as chairman of the board for Utah-based AgriDyne Techologies Inc.

Still involved with his alma mater, he has served as executive-in-residence for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and was the college's Alumni Fellow in 1991 and its Alumnus of the Year in 1997.

In addition, he was presented with the MSU Agricultural Alumni Achievement Award during his tenure with Monsanto Co.
