Virus protection available for university, personal computers

A new agreement between Information Technology Services and Symantec allows virus protection software for faculty, staff, and students to be used on both university-owned and privately-owned desktop computers.

ITS has acquired a site-wide software license agreement for Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus Corporate Edition.

The California-based Symantec Corp. is a leading producer of Internet security technology, and SAV is one of the industry's leading software packages for protecting against computer viruses and worms. The license agreement allows MSU employees and students to use the antivirus programs on both Macintosh and Windows computers.

The software is available and can be installed or downloaded from the main ITS Web page at http://www.its.msstate.edu by following the link "Symantec AntiVirus Install/Download." Before obtaining the software, users will be required to authenticate by entering their NetID and Banner PIN, and then must agree to the terms and conditions of the license.

Also as part of this license agreement, ITS has acquired the "Symantec Antivirus for SMTP Gateways" software which provides the ability to scan for and remove viruses from e-mail.

ITS will be rolling this capability out over the next several weeks with an ultimate goal of being able to protect all MSU systems from e-mail-borne viruses.
