In addition to the annual Staff Appreciation Day, May 16 was a busy one for the university. During the morning, a ceremony was held in front of the Hunter Henry Center to dedicate the new flag memorial honoring alumnus Lt. Col. Jerry Dickerson, who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

Winners of 2003 Zacharias Distinguished Staff Awards are (l-r) Blake Garrard, farm foreman for the MAFES Dairy Research Center; Jan Wells, secretary for the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work; Janna Morgan Flint, administrative assistant in the Office of the President; and Myron Johnson, shop technician in the College of Architecture. Not present but also earning awards were Mehrzad Netadj, director of dining services, and Dale Welch, graduate studies manager in the Office of Graduate Studies. The annual event is sponsored by the Professional and Support Staff Advisory Council.

Ryozo Kato, Japan's ambassador to the U.S., delivered the ceremonial first pitch at an MSU-Alabama baseball game that ended the day. Kato was on a three-day visit to the state as a special guest of MSU's Center for International Security and Strategic Studies.
