Nearly 90 students from some three dozen schools in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio are participating in the 2003 Mississippi State University Band Camp.
Designed for junior high and high school band members, the July 6-12 program is sponsored by MSU Bands.
A free public concert on the 12th will conclude the 2003 program. To begin at 1 p.m. in the Colvard Union ballroom, the performance features the Camp Jazz and Concert bands under the direction of Elva Kaye Lance, director of bands, and associate band director Phil Min.
Also the camp director, Lance said the annual summer event operated for more than 30 years before taking a hiatus several years ago.
"Because of numerous inquiries from band directors around the state and region, we re-established the camp last year," Lance said. "The program also provides additional training opportunities for students preparing to enter the teacher workforce."
Private instruction, solo and small ensemble experiences, and introductory and basic music technology are among the major training areas. Hands-on laboratory experiences and pre-teacher training for music education majors also are provided.
In addition to the MSU professionals, the camp is staffed by upper-level music education majors and well-known regional high school band directors.
In addition to enrollment fees, funding is partially underwritten through an Achieve Mississippi Project grant to provide enrichment training for Mid-South teachers not yet certified in their respective states.
