Montgomery book signing scheduled for July 10

MSU-Meridian is hosting a July 10 book signing for former congressman and MSU alumnus G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery.

"Sonny Montgomery: The Veteran's Champion" was written by Montgomery with Michael B. Ballard and Craig S. Piper.

Ballard is coordinator of the Congressional and Political Research Center at Mississippi State. Piper is the center's archivist.

The retired congressman will begin signing copies of the book at noon and continue until 2 p.m. at the Kahlmus Auditorium of MSU-Meridian. Books to be signed must be purchased the day of the event at the Meridian campus, starting at 11 a.m.

Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966, Democrat Montgomery represented Mississippi's 3rd District in Congress for fifteen terms, serving under seven presidents. His autobiography describes his experiences in nearly forty years of public life. It highlights his work with military veterans and, in particular, his sponsorship of the Montgomery G.I. Bill (HR 1657), which overhauled the original 1947 legislation by extending benefits to thousands of soldiers in the nation's all-volunteer service.

Since retiring, Montgomery lives in both Meridian and Washington, D.C., where he still is an active veterans' advocate.
