A Mississippi State alumnus wants the whole world to see the campus and its historic Drill Field from the vantage point of the engineering college where he spent so many memorable years, so he put a camera where his heart is.
A "netcam" camera purchased through a donation by Jackson dentist Jeffrey D. "Jeff" Hartsog has been placed in a strategic location atop McCain Hall, home of the Bagley College of Engineering. It provides a panoramic, westward view of the Drill Field and some of the surrounding buildings 24 hours a day for anyone who wants to visit http://www.ie.msstate.edu .
The Web site is maintained by the Department of Industrial Engineering, also housed in McCain.
"With Dr. Hartsog's support and dedication to the Department of Industrial Engineering, we have purchased a 'netcam' so that people all over the world can view MSU as engineering students see it, from the McCain engineering building," said Alan Lovelace, an industrial engineering graduate student from Gulfport.
"This camera will enable students, alumni, prospective students, and many others to see what is going on at MSU at all times," he added.
Lovelace said the $1,000 NetCam MP Internet Camera is a 1.3 megapixel digital camera that produces a quality image. The campus view is updated every five seconds.
Hartsog earned bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering from MSU in 1971 and 1973, respectively. After working in the industry for several years, he continued his education and became a dentist.
He also is the owner of a bulldog named Humphrey, which earlier served a brief stint as the MSU mascot, "Bully."
"Jeff has maintained close ties with the department since his graduation," said Lovelace, noting Hartsog currently serves as a member of the department's Industrial Engineering Advisory Committee. "We are fortunate to have alumni like him."
