Technology confab is scheduled

Faculty, administrators and other professionals from Mississippi universities and community colleges will gather Feb. 29-March 2 to explore ways of integrating new media and information technology into the teaching-and-learning process.

The "Creating Futures through Technology Conference and Trade Show 2004," to be held at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi, is co-sponsored by the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning and the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.

"Attendees will see and hear how changes in higher education information technology and new media continue to make teaching and learning an improved experience in the 21st century," said Al Lind, chief information officer with IHL.

Topics include wireless technologies, PDAs in the classroom, remote sensing, Internet2, online learning, accreditation issues, new interactive video applications, distance learning policy, security issues, designing Web pages for the disabled, and the Mississippi Virtual Community College and the Mississippi e-Campus.

"The variety of activities and sessions will provide a rich environment in which attendees will learn from experts in educational technology, encounter case studies of the best uses of technology in higher education and examine the latest products and services for the educational market," said Ray Smith, director of information services for the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges.

Program activities will include a technology trade show and a wireless Internet cafe. A variety of pre-conference workshops also will be offered.

Keynote presentations include William B. Rayburn, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of FNC Inc., and a panel of high school seniors.
