Campus trees to be evaluated
The landscape of central campus may change over the next few months as the university evaluates, prunes and, in some cases, removes dead or dying trees.
The project is made possible by a $30,000 matching urban forestry grant from the Mississippi Forestry Commission, according to Rob Rice, interim director of the Campus Landscape Department.
"Our main concern is safety," Rice explained. "We will hire an arborist to evaluate the trees and determine which are hazardous. Then a tree service company will prune or remove the trees found to be a threat."
Rice said that while trees will be removed, as many as 40 trees may be planted in their place.
"We will be hiring a landscape architect to recommend replacement trees," he added.
The center campus affected areas include sections from near Allen Hall, to the Drill Field, to the west side of Hardy Street and to just past Bost Extension Center, including the old railroad bed.
The project is scheduled for completion by June 30.
