Tuition hike will help fund pay raises

The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning approved a 6 percent tuition increase for Mississippi State that will be effective with the fall 2004 semester.

The increase amounts to $232 a year for Mississippi residents who will pay $4,105 in tuition and required fees next year, and $526 a year for out-of-state students, whose annual rate will be $9,304.

"This increase is necessary to ensure the continued quality of the educational program at Mississippi State," President Charles Lee said in a message to students and parents.

Half of the proceeds from the tuition increase will be used to help provide salary adjustments averaging about 3 percent to faculty and staff who have had only one raise during the past five years. Increased tuition revenue also will help offset rising utility costs and other unavoidable expenses.

Even with the increase, tuition and required fees at MSU will be among the lowest at Southeastern Conference universities next year, Lee said.
