TV Center joins Extension and Outreach structure
The University Television Center will report to the executive director of University Extension and Outreach as of July 1, completing the co-alignment of units with significant outreach functions that began last year.
The video production unit will join the MSU Extension Service, Continuing Education, Consolidated Printing Services, and the new Industrial Outreach Service under the umbrella of University Extension and Outreach.
"This will complete the process of bringing together the units that were envisioned as part of a coordinated outreach effort," said Dr. Joe McGilberry, executive director of university extension and outreach. "These units will work closely together to help the university extend its resources most effectively and efficiently for the benefit of the state."
The University Television Center will continue to work with any campus unit that needs its services, McGilberry said, while seeking to provide expanded support for teaching, research, and outreach efforts.
The TV Center produces the weekly "Farm Week" television program shown on Mississippi Public Broadcasting for the MSU Extension Service, produces coaches shows and videos for the Department of Athletics, provides broadcasting students with hands-on learning by producing programs for the MSTV-30 cable channel, supports communication department courses in broadcasting, and produces promotional videos for various campus clients.
The TV Center, located at the Wise Center, also offers both fixed and transportable satellite uplink and downlink services.
"We want to better educate the campus and the state about the TV Center's capabilities," McGilberry said. "The center can be a resource, for example, for researchers who need to deliver the results of their work in a video format."
The TV Center has been a part of the Division of External Affairs, which includes administration of the MSU Foundation, MSU Alumni Association, University Relations, WMSV, the MSU Flight Department, and the MSU Golf Course.
"I completely support this move," said Vice President for External Affairs Dennis Prescott. "It better positions both the TV Center and MSU to serve our constituents more effectively."
The TV Center is headed by Ralph Olivieri, director for operations, and Mike Godwin, director for technology and chief engineer.
The current University Extension and Outreach began taking shape last fall with the co-alignment of the MSU Extension Service and the Division of Continuing Education. The university Printing Department and a printing operation in the Extension Service were consolidated and made part of the broader unit. The new Industrial Outreach Service will serve the state's manufacturing and processing sector much as the Extension Service works with agricultural interests, business start-ups, and educational programs.
