Flagpole dedication to feature music, remarks

Dedication of the newly renovated flagpole area on the Drill Field is scheduled for Sept. 20.

The program begins at 6 p.m. and will include patriotic music, remarks from student leaders, President Charles Lee and Vice President for Student Affairs Bill Kibler, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Funded entirely by fraternity and sorority members at the university, the $30,000 redesigned and re-landscaped seating and gathering area replaces an older and smaller flagpole mount.

The renovated site now includes new lighting, which allows the new 25-by-15-foot American flag to be displayed 24 hours a day. Previously, the flag was raised and lowered at dawn and dusk. In addition, a brick seating area is surrounded by sections of flowers in rotating annual colors.

Work on the project was completed by campus landscape technicians based on a design provided by former landscape architecture major Colin Brock. A 2002 graduate from Raymond, Brock currently works for Regen-Bogen Associates of Charlotte, N.C.
