STARKVILLE, Miss.-Many people view gambling only as a fun activity that can't lead to a serious addiction. Want to bet on that?

Linda Cox, Mississippi State University's director of counseling services, is among those who take issue with the doubters of gambling's potential for addiction.

"Some people begin gambling with expectations of solving financial problems," she says. "Actually, gambling is likely to worsen their financial problems."

For persons concerned that a friend or relative might have an addiction, Cox suggests looking at the severity and frequency of the gambling behavior to decide if a problem exists. Some signs of an addiction: impulsive trips to casinos, secretive behavior in regards to gambling and the unaccounted removal of money from a bank account via automated teller machines.

Cox says those who believe a family member or friend has a gambling problem should confront the person "in a caring manner to let them know you are worried." Gamblers recognizing their addiction should promptly seek help from professional counselors or support groups, she adds.

To help avoid a gambling addiction, Cox offers several suggestions:

--Don't begin with high expectations about winning;

--Consider what you can afford and pre-set a maximum amount of money to spend;

--Look at gambling only as recreation, not a source of income;

--Leave ATM and credit cards at home if you will be tempted to use them;

--Use a "buddy system" and have a friend along to help keep you accountable; and

--To maintain your best judgment, avoid alcohol or drug use.
