STARKVILLE, Miss.—For fashion enthusiasts, summer is the time when feet come out of cold-weather hiding and get showcased in strappy sandals and other open footwear.
To be sure those tootsies are ready for display, a Mississippi State fashion and merchandising specialist says “a 12-month approach” is essential. “For lovely feet in the summer, you must take care of them year-round,” advises Phyllis B. Miller of the university’s School of Human Sciences.
Begin with a cleanliness routine that includes careful washing with nail polish removed. Apply a moisturizing lotion after cleaning that contains ultraviolet protection. Look for foot creams that contain such ingredients as avobenzone, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
Miller says clean nails then may be polished in a multi-step application process that begins with a neutral base coat, followed by two coats of color and a top coat to seal. Avoid delicate cuticles when polishing and be sure to trim nails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails, she adds. Because polish removers can damage nails and cuticles, make pedicures last as long as possible.
Keeping feet as dry as possible is another care essential. If regular exercise is part of the weekly regime, remember to always remove damp socks immediately after working out. Also, when soaking feet in warm water, avoid detergent solutions and limit the soak time to no more than three minutes to limit nail damage.
Miller lists other ways to keep toenails in top condition, including the:
—Daily use of a pumice stone, foot paddle or dead skin remover while showering.
—Practice of purchasing shoes only in afternoon or later in order to get the best fit.
—Presence of mind to immediately contact a physician should nails become discolored, flaky or too thick—all signs of potential fungal infections.
