STARKVILLE, Miss.-Protecting yourself from the damaging effects of the sun doesn't require living in a cave. With basic, easily obtainable information, anyone can become sun savvy and safely enjoy summer days outdoors.
"Regardless of skin type or ethnicity, everyone should use sunscreen daily," says Mandy Burleson, a health educator at Mississippi State University's student health center.
While there are many types of sunscreens, all do not offer the same level of protection, she emphasizes. Just five sunburns can double the risk of developing skin cancer, she adds.
Because selection of the right sunscreen is very important, Burleson offers several tips to remember when shopping:
- A screen with at least a sun-protection-factor (SPF) of 15-30, if prone to burn.
- Brands with new broad-spectrum formulas that block both UVA and UVB rays.
- More expensive products do not necessarily offer better protection.
- While they make screens more pleasurable to wear, such ingredients as aloe, fragrance, natural additives, or bug repellants do not make the product more effective.
Burleson urges sunscreen users to remember that, whether the product is a longtime favorite or new formula, proper application remains critical for ensuring effectiveness. The first steps should involve checking the expiration date and shaking the bottle well. Others include:
- Applying a first coating 30 minutes before going outside, and making reapplications every two hours or after swimming;
- Thoroughly rubbing in the product, using an ample amount-an ounce usually can cover the entire body-and not forgetting the ears, back of the neck, etc.
"The sun's rays are at their peak from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.," Burleson explained. "People need to be sure to protect themselves, especially during these times."
