STARKVILLE, Miss.--As the heat of summer descends, it’s more important than ever to consume the recommended daily amount of water. But, that doesn’t mean that you have to lug around eight glasses of water everywhere you go.

“There are a variety of foods and beverages that provide water,” says Jennifer Fuller, health educator at Mississippi State University’s Longest Student Health Center. “Fruits can contain the water you need, especially watermelons, which store a lot.”

Fuller adds to the list soup, juices, lemonade, and punches, all of which contain significant amounts that can count towards the recommended daily water intake.

For persons trying to lose a few pounds, Fuller says it’s important to know that water—unlike other alternatives—contains no calories. The weight-conscious consumer would do better to opt for water instead of high-calorie juices and punches, she adds.

For those who have difficulty drinking water, Fuller suggests the addition of lemon or orange wedges for flavor. Also, there are brands of flavored water now on the market, though they can cost more than plain H2O.

“Water has so many important functions that it is vital to have the recommended amount,” Fuller says. “The body depends on water to sustain chemical reactions, maintain normal body temperature and help get rid of waste.”
